While the software is limited, and won’t replicate everything you may expect from Photos–at least not yet–it’s still quite robust. Moments does a surprisingly great job of recognizing objects and people, including things like cars, and it’s robust enough to replicate many of Google Photos’ best features.

It’s an AI-enabled photo management application that runs on the NAS, and you can set it up to be accessible from outside your home, or leave it strictly accessible while you’re at home.įrom within the Android app, or from the secure website, Moments will offer effects for your photos, organize them by people, subjects, and places, and you can search based on any of those terms. Moments is one of the most useful NAS packages though for photo enthusiasts.

From the user interface you can setup users, permissions, folders, and packages that offer everything from music playback, to a media server, or external backups. What’s really impressive is that Synology’s devices are packed with software and features for just about any type of user. I’ve been using the NAS for a while now, and it’s a great system for backing up files, and Synology Moments offers a very similar experience to Google Photos, without any fees after you purchase the NAS and drives. That’s why I love the Synology DiskStation DS420+ NAS. I love the features, and the way you can search for text and specific images or places, but I don’t want to keep paying into larger and larger plans, especially when I create a lot of images and videos that I want to back up. The catch is that there isn’t one service that’s as robust as Google Photos, and even backing up at “high quality,” I could likely fill 100 GB within a few months, considering how much I shoot with my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. By comparison, Microsoft OneDrive is $79.00 per year for 1 TB, and that includes Microsoft Office. Then it’s $27.99 Canadian, annually, for 100 GB, and at the higher level, 2 TB is $139.99 annually.

With a free account, you get 15 GB of storage for your Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. I obviously understand that it needs to be profittable to justify development so I hope that it might reach that point sooner rather than later. The problem comes back to Google’s storage prices. Just wanted to share that and register my interest in seeing G-Suite support developed. Having a G-Suite option available could be a good way of retaining some educational customers as the customers move away from their traditional Microsoft setups. This has meant that we are spending less on Veeam licencing now than two years ago as it is simply no longer needed. Perhaps another way to look at it in business terms as well is that as we move further into the cloud space we have begun to reduce our on-site foot print. A lot of schools will consider this important though, particularly high schools as student work becomes more important as they get closer to completing their schooling. I predict a large uptake of G-Suite in schools over the next couple of years as word of mouth spreads and experiences are shared with other schools.Īlthough we are very interested in exploring a backup solution for our G-Suite data (Primarily data in Google Drive) I can confirm that a lot of school's won't neccessarily place the same value on the data or plan for disaster as we do.

The trend that we are seeing with other schools is that G-Suite is generating a lot of interest and schools are starting to move to the platform away from Microsoft (cloud/Onsite) as the devices (Chromebooks) are generally cheaper and the software is better designed for education. We have also become a G-Suite school over the last 1-2 years and are rapidly moving cloud based. Couldn't be happier as it works great and we don't have any significant issues with it. We are a large high school in Australia and currently use Veeam B&R Enterprise for our onsite server infrastructure.

Just wanted to add my thoughts to the discussion. I just went searching to see if Veeam supports G-Suite backup and was plesantly surprised when I found this active thread discussing it.
